Music from Waaaaaah!: C86 to mp3
I have wanted to share this with you for a long time: Richard, owner of the Waaaaaah! label and fanzine from the early 90s, has put all publications online for free download – digitized from the LP, so please do not expect any sound revelations.
But that is not necessary at all – it gives the songs more charm anyway. They are shy indie pop numbers, stylistically post-C86 or Tweepop (after the famous cassette in the New Musical Express from 1986). Peter Hahndorf’s Tweenet provides a lot of information about bands and labels.
For those who do not want to download everything (although you should), Richard has put cute little cats behind his favorite songs. Here are my favorites:
- They Go Boom with “Body” (nice dry beat) and Cudgel’s “Summer Colour” (bold guitar sounds in beautiful contrast with the vocals) from the Waaaaaah! CD
- Mary Queen of Scots on her split with Peru because of the outrageously catchy interwoven guitar tones and synth pads
- They Go Boom on their 12-inch “Beyond Tomorrow”, which somehow just misses Europop
- “Apple Orchard” by Bouquet on their “Pink Blossom in Outer Space” 7-inch, because the song nicely implements the title of the record
- the entire 7-Inch by the Snowbirds
- Northern Picture Lady because of the band name and not being afraid of reverb on “Something Good” on “The Sound of Music”
Have fun on your own musical journeys of discovery!
