Musical potpourri: something new for the ears
It’s been a while since I have delighted or annoyed you with musical discoveries from the depths of the web (depending on your taste) – I think it was the EP by The Cults from the early days of my magister thesis break. Now it is time to change that.
[start advertising mode] So here you go, just for now, a fantastic triple feature for the price of one! [start lying mode] Exclusively, [stop lying mode] new stuff for your own auditory canals from Girl Talk, Get Well Soon and Ivan Ivanovich & The Kreml Krauts! [stop advertising mode] Enjoy!
Girl Talk – “All Day”: music over, next to and into each other in a danceable remix
A few weeks ago, DJ Gregg Michael Gillis, better known as Girl Talk, published his new album “All Day” under CC BY NC license on his label Illegal Art. As usual, he remixes his way across the musical landscape, always hip-hop-heavy and beat-driven.
Incidentally, Girl Talk made a prominent appearance in Brett Gaylor’s 2008 open-source documentary “RiP! A Remix Manifesto”, which deals with the phenomenon of the remix grey area and asks questions about copyright in the digital age. The film features Lawrence Lessig, founder of Creative Commons, Gilberto Gil, former Brazilian Minister of Culture (and musician), and blogger Cory Doctorow. A flash version can be seen at the National Film Board of Canada.
Get Well Soon – “Live at the Konzerthaus Dortmund”: Symphonic songs in a symphonic guise
Get Well Soon has a good chance of becoming my favorite artist at the moment. Luckily, he recorded the EP “Live at the Konzerthaus Dortmund”. Available for download on his homepage, it features Konstantin Gropper’s (his real name) exquisite songs in an expansive guise with a large orchestra. It is a nice introduction for those of you who do not yet know Get Well Soon.
Ivan Ivanovich & The Kreml Krauts – “Begi Suka”: schnitzel beat between folklore, ska and polka
Finally, something from home, no less worth listening to: Ivan Ivanovich sings in Russian, and the music of the Kreml Krauts moves between Russian folklore, ska and polka. They call it schnitzel beat. Matthias did an interview with 5vier exciting interview with the artists, where you can listen to and keep their EP “Begi Suka”. The new album will be released at the beginning of 2011 and is already on the agenda.
