Yes, yes, the good old media convergence. What actually only refers to media would have to be defined much more broadly and also extended to computers (computer convergence? Well, I do not know). While certain operating systems are ostentatiously flaunting their 64 bits, the fan community unabashedly indulges its love of 8 bits. And so you can find a whole range of cool projects on the internet that revive the sounds of the C64 and Atari. You can find a small selection after the jump.

Feverish 8-bit chirping for the dance floor

8-bit music is something very special: squeaky, trashy, hard and sweet at the same time. 8bitpeoples is an artist collective dedicated to music inspired by classic video games and their characteristic sound chip. Most of it is released for free and features beautifully pixelated artwork. It is a treasure trove worth hours of browsing. If you do not want to spend that much time, check out the BitJam podcast, which regularly delivers beautiful 8-bit mixes to your podcatcher. The whole thing came about in the context of the demoscene – there is also something about that on my eternal list of topics for this blog.

A few final thoughts

I would be very interested to know what actually drives people to recycle technologies that have long been considered obsolete on the net – as recently happened with the interesting Polaroid simulation Poladroid. And why the results are so inspiring. Is it pure nostalgia? Or perhaps even the desire to return to a somewhat less perfect technology that stimulates creativity?
