HTML5 and CSS3 are the building blocks of the future of the web – and Peter Kröner explains in a video tutorial (Galileo Press, €36.99) what is already possible today. Who would benefit from taking a look at the tutorial?

Peter Kröner, a trainer and “explainer” (his own description), is anything but unknown in the world of HTML5. His seminal book “HTML5” enabled me to take my first steps with the new web technology a few years ago. His blog is one of the top addresses on the German web on the subject, and the author can regularly be seen at lectures around the country. Here is a recording from the Multimediatreff 28 about the offline functionalities of HTML5:

Nine hours for web design practitioners

So, now a video training course on the subject – nine hours all about HTML5 and CSS3, with all the topics that are already relatively well established:

  • new semantic elements in HTML5 such as article and section,
  • forms and their validation with browser tools,
  • audio and video content without plugins,
  • positioning with the geolocation API,
  • new CSS3 properties for gradients, transparencies, and animations,
  • design for mobile devices with responsive web design

But there are also some more specialized topics that are a little outside the standard functions for web designers – offline applications and drawing in HTML5 (using canvas), new layout types with columns, and some of the more unusual selectors in CSS3. All of this is presented in a practical way, with the source code being written and commented on live. I would have liked to have seen more of the more experimental aspects of HTML5 and CSS3 in particular – the book mentioned above is more comprehensive in this regard. However, that is no wonder: a video training can hardly cover as many aspects as a 400-page book; besides, it has clear advantages in terms of clarity.

Useful functions – without DRM

The examples are included on the DVD and are written and commented on live in the videos. Technically, Galileo scores with the beautiful format of its video training: the DVD is divided into clear lessons, an introductory video and a constantly visible outline ensure that you can always find your way around. The numerous anchors within the videos are also practical, allowing you to easily jump to the desired section.

If, like me, you are reluctant to work with optical media on your computer, you can still use the training. All videos can be copied from the disk to the hard drive, in high quality and without DRM nonsense as mp4 videos.

Conclusion: A practical introduction

With “HTML5 and CSS3”, Peter Kröner has created a good visual companion to the world of HTML5 and CSS3. Of course, the training cannot replace a book, especially in terms of detail; but it scores with many useful functions and good didactic preparation. The video training focuses on the features of the new technology, which you can use to get started right away. Peter Kröner not only presents himself as a proven expert at the forefront of technological development, but also explains the topics in an entertaining way and with a wink.

You should already have a basic knowledge of HTML and CSS, because the DVD is not a pure beginner’s work. It is aimed more at those switching from earlier versions of web technologies. Excerpts from the training are available on the corresponding website of the publisher.
