Experimental Sound Design: the work of Diego Stocco
Dieco Stocco experiments with sounds, using all kinds of unusual sound sources. Worth listening to!
Recently, I came across a video well worth seeing on the link: http://www.blogpiloten.de/2009/03/17/the-sand-of-music/ text: Blogpiloten website), full of unusual sounds:
The man behind it all, Diego Stocco, is Italian but lives in California. He describes himself as a sound designer, and for this piece he really did use nothing but sand.
I emphasized the inner notes of the sand grains and mapped them on a sampler as a series of instruments. The grooves are all played live with various techniques, including taping two piezo films to my fingers.
In an interview that is well worth reading, Diego Stocco explains his approach: he is looking for “unique sounds never heard before” and will set a piano on fire to find them. Goosebump music with unusual instruments.
One day, tired of seeing it sitting there doing nothing, I had the idea to sample it while it was on fire in order to create a long lasting “last performance.” Although I had mixed feelings about doing it, I was very curious to hear how it would sound while burning. I was scared to burn the trees around the piano and a little sad knowing that it would be gone forever. All of the sounds you hear in the video were from the piano.
